Packing the Main Chute
main page | rocket index

The series of pictures below show the process of tying the actual parachute burrito package. The actual containment is achieved by using an ejection canister prepared with two pieces of 15lb test fish line passing through it. As the powder charge burns, it burns through the line, releasing the burrito. A heated piece of 22 gauge wire is a perfect size for creating holes in the canister.

When making the holes, ensure they are in the part of the canister where the powder resides. Only a minimal charge is required (1/2 gram of ffffG or Pyrodex - if using Pyrodex I recommend a drop of CA to secure the cover of the canister). Also, it is important that the burrito blanket be tied in such a way that drag from the fall on drogue is applied to the burrito attachment rather than the main chute attachment. If the pressure is on the main, it will possibly (likely?) deploy early.

Clicking any of these pictures will bring up a larger version.

The chute is placed in the center of the square of fireproof cloth.
Blanket is approximately 12" square, chute is 60" in diameter.

The corners are folded in to the center.

The top flap is folded down.

A final fold brings the entire package up against the recovery harness.

in the canister and properly wadded before beginning this step. Powder was
omitted during this photo series for safety reasons.
